Primary Transition

Primary schools offer a fantastic learning environment for students who, by the time they Transition6.pngreach the end of Year 6, are good learners and eager to move on to the new opportunities and challenges on offer at Costello. We build upon the great work done by our Primary partners and work extremely hard to ensure the transition from Primary to Secondary is as smooth and exciting (rather than scary) as possible.

Transition3Our transition programme is excellent and has received national acclaim. With a designated year-round transition project, accompanied by an experienced team of staff, we get to know the Year 6 students in detail. We pride ourselves in having weekly contact with all our Primary partner schools and not just leaving it until the Summer Term. Year 6 students meet our Transition Teacher every week and have the opportunity to attend a variety of activities at Costello throughout the year – Science, Maths and Technology workshops, Drama, Art and Music projects. They meet some of the Costello teaching staff, together with current students. Several visits to Costello are organised throughout the year. We have designated personnel who can be contacted at any point throughout the year if there are any causes of concern from both parents and our Primary partner schools. All this means that we get to know your child really well, before they eventually reach us.

Transition4.pngNearer the time of their transition, our new students spend a day at Costello in July and follow a timetable in their new Tutor Groups. Parents are also invited to an information evening where they receive a parent handbook giving them advice on how they can support their child whilst at secondary school. Students are visited in their own schools by our staff with students from Year 7 who share their experiences. This gives our staff the opportunity to appraise the students ensuring they are placed in appropriate sets with suitable classmates and that any special needs are met.Transition9.png

In September, students are met by their Tutors, who become their central point of contact. All Year 7 Tutor groups have Year 11 Prefects attached to them. At Costello the welfare of your child is paramount and in the first term you will be invited to meet your child’s Tutor.
